Timpson told guests how 20,000 claims in the UK were made on CI policies amounting to £0.5bn last year.
He said protection needed to be seen as a specialist area with its own professional body.
“That would be quite a significant milestone that we should all work on.”
Timpson said the Financial Conduct Authority’s consumer duty was an opportunity for the industry to better understand customer needs and improve customer understanding of protection.
