He has been with Orbis for 16 years, most recently leading the firm's investment counsellor team which is responsible for dealing with institutional clients and investment consultants.

Spencer pledged to put clients first. He added: "I am very excited about this opportunity, and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve.”

Orbis said Spencer has been working closely with Bradshaw over the past few months to ensure there will be no disruption to Orbis’ operations or client services.

The firm said Spencer will continue to focus on UK advisers as well as exploring opportunities to reach a broader UK client base.

Dan Brocklebank, head of Orbis Investments in the UK, said: "By appointing Matthew, we are reaffirming our commitment to enhancing value for our UK clients.

"His experience, and deep understanding of market and client dynamics, strongly positions him to lead the team, where he will continue to ensure that Orbis remains responsive to clients’ needs as the investment landscape evolves."
